Radyo Kalikasan, the longest running environmental radio program in the country,
recently celebrated its 12th year of Philippine broadcasting. The Digital
Datu got to talk to its co-founder and anchorman, Rene "Propesor Balita" Molina.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
When did Radyo Kalikasan first go on air?
Radyo Kalikasan:
The first broadcast was on July 28, 1991 aired every Sunday 10-11 a.m. over DZXQ 1350 kHz.
It stayed in that station for more than six years and has since moved to another station
but its commitment to environmental broadcasting has never faltered.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
Who were the proponents of the program?
Radyo Kalikasan:
This is a joint effort of the Miriam College Communication Arts and Advertising Department,
and Miriam-P.E.A.C.E. (Public Education and Awareness Campaign for the Environment) the
environmental outreach arm of the college. We are very grateful for the support of Dr. Nina
Galang, the director of Miriam-P.E.A.C.E. and the other members like Tessa, Vicky, Tina,
Cecile, Roomy, Louie, Mill, Ira, Edith, Dr. De, and the CA faculty.

| |
| |
Digital Datu:
What was the objective of coming up with an environmental radio program?
Radyo Kalikasan:
The main thrust is to instill the value of environmental protection among its listeners.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
Why a radio program?
Radyo Kalikasan:
The media is known to influence the opinion of its audience. Among all forms of media, the
radio captures the largest segment of the population. People in the BCDE segment who
form the bulk of the society and play key roles in cleanliness and environmental
care are the most important targets of radio. The potential for radio
to convey environmental information is therefore tremendous.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
Who is your target market?
Radyo Kalikasan:
When we started in 1991 our original target audience were children ages 7-12. But through the
years we have expanded our reach to other sectors of society, ages 7-100.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
What are the segments of the program?
Radyo Kalikasan:
Kalikasan Trivia
- bits and pieces of information about the rich and diverse life forms of our
ecosystems, environmental concepts and practices.
Kalikasan Patrol
- a group of volunteer
youth reporters and radio talents from different schools deliver live
reports on current environmental activities.
Patimpalak Pangkalikasan
- contests where listeners are encouraged to call in and answer questions
on topics taken up during the program.
Panayam Pangkalikasan
- a 30-minute dialogue with experts from various areas ranging from non-governmental
organizations to government agencies, from business conglomerates to academic
institutions, from social groups to private citizens, from entertainment
personalities to students.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
Since this is radio, do you also play music?
Radyo Kalikasan:
Of course. We have Tinig Pangkalikasan - beautiful melodies that narrate
stories of Mother Nature. However, I have expanded this to include songs not
only with environmental messages but also those with positive messages like
love, peace, justice and the like.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
How about the local activities of other environmental NGOs, do you cover them?
Radyo Kalikasan:
Yes, we get to be invited to various conferences, seminars, workshops and forums.
The things we learned in these invitations we get to share them with our listeners.
We also have the segment Barangay Kalikasan, wherein we report the different activities
of NGOs, POs and foundations.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
Who is your co-anchor?
Radyo Kalikasan:
She is Professor Donna Reyes, a faculty member of Miriam College, Ph.D. in Environmental
Studies candidate from Griffith University (Australia) and deputy director of Miriam-P.E.A.C.E.
She provides the scientific angle of the show.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
And what do you contribute as anchorman?
Radyo Kalikasan:
I take care of the technical requirements as well as act as the ordinary people’s barometer
with my simple and practical questions. I really learned a lot all these years and still am
continuously learning.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
How about advertisers, the lifeblood of programs?
Radyo Kalikasan:
Since this is an advocacy program we are very selective when it comes to advertisers.
We are very proud to partner with JRS Express and the Ecological Society of the Philippines
since day one. We are constantly on the lookout for other sponsors but
it is not our priority.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
How come?
Radyo Kalikasan:
We are after long-term partnerships, with holistic and synergistic relationships with our
listeners, sponsors and the environmental movement.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
What are your plans for the future?
Radyo Kalikasan:
We are constantly learning and upgrading ourselves. We hope to reach a nationwide audience
in the near future. And maybe an award or two will be really something.
|
| |
| |
Digital Datu:
Any final message to your listeners?
Radyo Kalikasan:
Thank you for a wonderful and exciting 12 years. We look forward to the next 12 years of service.
Tune in to us every Sunday, 8-9 a.m. on DWBL 1242 kHz. "Ako po ang inyong lingkod, Rene 'Propesor Balita'
Molina, propesor is my name, balita is my game and the environment is my concern. Mabuhay ang sambayanang
Pilipinas, God Bless!"
